VAT Registration Germany: Complete Process Guide
How to register for VAT in Germany. Application process, documents needed, timelines, and getting your USt-IdNr.
Two Types of Tax Numbers
Germany has two relevant numbers: 1. Steuernummer — assigned by your local Finanzamt for all tax purposes 2. USt-IdNr (Umsatzsteuer-Identifikationsnummer) — EU VAT number, format: DE + 9 digits
You need both. The Steuernummer comes from your Finanzamt registration; the USt-IdNr must be separately requested from the BZSt.
Registration Process
1. Register your business with the Gewerbeamt (for Gewerbetreibende) or Finanzamt (for Freiberufler) 2. Complete the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung (tax questionnaire) via ELSTER 3. Indicate whether you want Kleinunternehmerregelung or standard VAT 4. Receive your Steuernummer (2-4 weeks) 5. Apply for USt-IdNr at BZSt (additional 2-4 weeks) 6. Begin charging VAT once registered
Foreign Businesses
Non-German EU businesses can get a German VAT registration by applying to: • Finanzamt Berlin Neukölln (for most EU businesses)
Required documents: • Certificate of incorporation • Proof of existing VAT registration in home country • Description of business activities in Germany • Bank details
Processing time: 4-8 weeks
