TL;DR: Umsatzsteuer (USt) is Germany's value-added tax. Here's how it works, from calculation to filing.

    What is Umsatzsteuer?

Umsatzsteuer (USt) is Germany's value-added tax, equivalent to VAT in other EU countries. It applies to: • Domestic sales of goods and services • Imports into Germany • Intra-community acquisitions

Rates: • 19% — Standard rate (most goods and services) • 7% — Reduced rate (food, books, public transport, cultural events, hotel stays)

    Vorsteuerabzug (Input VAT Deduction)

The core principle of USt: you can deduct VAT paid on business purchases (Vorsteuer) from VAT collected on sales.

Net VAT owed = Output VAT - Input VAT

If input exceeds output, you receive a refund from the Finanzamt. This happens often for new businesses with significant investments.

    Filing and Payment

    • Voranmeldung (advance return): monthly or quarterly via ELSTER • Deadline: 10th of the following month (extendable by one month with Dauerfristverlängerung) • Annual return (Umsatzsteuererklärung): due July 31 • Payment: via bank transfer or SEPA direct debit
